POWER BI and SAP S/4HANA: Harnessing the Power of In-Memory
Your company runs on SAP S/4HANA, the finest of modern ERPs, powered by an "In-Memory" database capable of scanning millions of entries in a fraction of a second. Yet this power often remains locked away: standard Fiori reports handle operational work very well, but never give decision-makers the flexibility of cross-functional strategic analysis. This course teaches you how to unlock S/4 data and place it, alive and readable, into the hands of those who steer the business.
The approach is hands-on and true to the reality of an SAP project. You will learn how to bypass the complexity of the technical tables — starting with the famous universal table ACDOCA — to connect directly to CDS (Core Data Services) views through the certified SAP HANA connectors. All the business logic defined in SAP is thus preserved: no calculation rule to recreate in Power BI. You will then choose between the two strategies that can make or break a business intelligence project — DirectQuery mode for critical real time, Import mode for ultra-fast multi-year histories — and you will build a robust data model, sound DAX measures, and visuals that speak.
By the end of the program, you will walk away with real financial dashboards (P&L, Balance Sheet) and logistics dashboards that leverage HANA's speed to deliver a smooth experience, even on massive volumes. You will know how to secure access by profile, publish to the Power BI service, and industrialize the refresh. In short, you will become the bridge between the richness of the SAP system and the intelligence of decisions — the skill every S/4HANA organization is looking for.
What you walk away with
Far more than theoretical knowledge: deliverables ready to plug into your own system.
Operational dashboards — a P&L, a Balance Sheet, and a logistics dashboard as templates, fed by CDS views, which you adapt to your own environment.
A proven connection method — the right HANA connector, the right mode (DirectQuery vs Import), and a clean data model, documented step by step.
A library of DAX measures — the essential financial and logistics KPIs, reusable across all your future reports.
BSF support — our best practices in governance, security, and performance, drawn from real S/4HANA projects.
Program — 12 one-hour sessions
A program that follows the real life of an SAP business intelligence project: understanding the In-Memory architecture, connecting cleanly to S/4HANA data, modeling and calculating accurately, then building, securing, and industrializing financial and logistics dashboards.
Module 1 — Understanding the landscape: S/4HANA, In-Memory & Power BI (sessions 1-3)
1. The In-Memory architecture of SAP HANA — why HANA is fast (columnar storage, compression, in-memory computation) and what that speed changes for business intelligence compared to Fiori reports.
2. The S/4HANA data model — the universal table ACDOCA, the main domains (FI, CO, MM, SD), and why you never read the raw tables directly.
3. CDS views, the gateway to the business — Core Data Services: the SAP calculation logic encapsulated, ready to consume without recreating it in Power BI.
Module 2 — Connecting to the source (sessions 4-6)
4. The SAP certified connectors — SAP HANA connector and SAP BW/Application Server: which one to choose, prerequisites, authentication, and first connection tests.
5. DirectQuery or Import: the key decision — critical real time versus fast multi-year histories; impacts on performance, freshness, and volumes.
6. Retrieving a CDS view in Power BI — connecting to a view, handling parameters and variables, and bringing back a first clean dataset.
Module 3 — Modeling & calculating accurately (sessions 7-9)
7. Building the data model — star schema, fact and dimension tables, clean relationships, and a date table for reliable analysis.
8. The DAX language for finance — measures, filter context, and time-based calculations (running totals, prior year, variances) serving S/4 indicators.
9. Performance on large volumes — leveraging HANA's speed without wasting it: aggregations, efficient queries, and DirectQuery best practices.
Module 4 — Building, securing & deploying the dashboards (sessions 10-12)
10. Financial dashboard: P&L & Balance Sheet — building a readable income statement and balance sheet, from the grand total down to the detail, from ACDOCA data.
11. Logistics dashboard & security by profile — tracking inventory, purchasing, and sales; then row-level security (RLS) so each person only sees their own scope.
12. Publishing & industrializing — distribution in the Power BI service, data gateway, scheduled refresh, and report governance.
