Automating Inventory Management Indicators: Turning "Dormant Stock" into Cash

Automating Inventory Management Indicators: Turning "Dormant Stock" into Cash

For your manufacturing or trading company, inventory is probably the heaviest item on your balance sheet — and the quietest. As long as it sits dormant on your shelves, it makes no noise: it simply ties up your cash, month after month. The annual stocktake that records the damage once a year is over. This training teaches you to manage your physical flows with the same rigor as your financial flows, and to make every item speak: how fast it turns, how many days of coverage it gives you, how much it costs you just sitting there.

The approach is hands-on and results-driven. You start from your ERP — Sage, Odoo, Divalto or another — and connect it to Business Intelligence tools to automate the calculation of the indicators that truly matter: stock turnover item by item, coverage in days of sales, the ABC / FMR matrix that separates your vital items from your "slow movers," and the stockout rate that quantifies the revenue you're losing. You no longer just look at "how much" you have in stock: you measure the quality of that stock, continuously, with no re-entry.

By the end of the program, you walk away with a living dashboard, updated automatically, that turns raw data into purchasing and stock-clearing decisions. You know how to identify dormant stock, quantify it in cash terms, and build an action plan to free it up — often 15 to 20% of stock value recovered without degrading your service level. You're the one in control: automation is merely the lever that puts your cash to work, instead of leaving it on your shelves.

What you walk away with

A skill directly applicable to your company, not one more theory:

An automated inventory dashboard — your KPIs (turnover, coverage, ABC/FMR, stockouts) calculated and refreshed with no manual intervention.

A map of your dormant stock — the quantified list of items tying up your cash, ready to act on.

A stock-clearing and replenishment plan — concrete rules to buy smarter and free up cash.

The ERP → BI connection method — to link your data and replicate the approach on other indicators.

Program — 12 sessions of 1 hour

The program follows the real path of the data: understanding the cash stakes of inventory, connecting your ERP to BI, automating the critical indicators, then turning those numbers into decisions that free up your cash. Every session draws on your own catalog and real flows.

Module 1 — Understanding the stakes (sessions 1-2)

1. Inventory: asset or toxic liability — why inventory weighs on the balance sheet, how overstocking and obsolescence destroy cash, and the limits of the annual stocktake.

2. From inventory to working capital requirement — the link between stock value, working capital requirement and cash; what "freeing up cash" really means for your company.

Module 2 — Connecting and securing the data (sessions 3-5)

3. Mapping your ERP data — where stock movements, sales and purchases live in Sage, Odoo or Divalto, and which tables feed the indicators.

4. The ERP → BI connection — linking your ERP to the Business Intelligence tool to automate extraction, with no re-entry or manual export.

5. Cleaning and structuring the catalog — making items, families and units reliable so the calculations are accurate from the start.

Module 3 — Automating the critical indicators (sessions 6-9)

6. Stock turnover — automatic calculation by item and by family to spot the "slow movers" that have been dormant for 6 or 12 months.

7. Stock coverage — how many days of sales you have ahead of you; adjusting replenishment to avoid overstocking while securing sales.

8. ABC / FMR analysis — dynamically segmenting the catalog: your A items (80% of the value), your dormant C items, updated daily.

9. The stockout rate — measuring the impact of stockouts on lost revenue, and weighing service against tied-up capital.

Module 4 — Managing and turning into cash (sessions 10-12)

10. Building the dashboard — assembling your KPIs into a living dashboard that is readable and refreshed automatically, with alerts on deviations.

11. Identifying and quantifying dormant stock — pulling out the list of items to clear and translating it into immediately mobilizable cash.

12. The purchasing & stock-clearing action plan — setting the replenishment rules and the stock-clearing plan to recover 15 to 20% of stock value without degrading service.
